With the 1.6.2 version of ModLoader, the directory needed ML after the id, so instead of the id being "id" = "1.6.2" it would be named "id" = "1.6.2ML" when using the new launcher (directory naming could be anything as long as it matched). ModLoader and modding around the Beta and early release periods on the old launcher of Minecraft required adding files and folders to the minecraft.jar file and removing the old META-INF. FML is, in fact, a cleanroom rewrite of ModLoader, meaning mods from Risugami's modloader were compatible alongside Forge. ModLoader was the first Minecraft fan made/unofficial modloader created before Forge.
